To the East,
Behold the Moon at Sunrise.
Awake Earth,
Embrace the Flora and Spice.

This is an original watercolor that showcases my growing abilities within this medium. I began with figures in abstract, concentrating on the effects of pigment and water for dramatic colors and textures. With Absinth, I added the detail of the illustrative figure as she emerged from the clouds of texture and color. With my latest watercolor, To the East, Behold the Moon, I wanted to attempt more detail.

This is the first in a series of three that I have drawn out already. To the East, Behold the Moon started out very simple. I did not draw in all those damn flowers. Instead, I followed the lead of Peri Miller, my friend and teacher, and made the flowers the abstract element. I’ve also added new colors to my pallet. Not that I bought anything new, more like I just started to finally begin mixing colors. The outcome seems to flow more as a composition than a battle between primary colors.

I must admit, I wasn’t liking this at first. It is very busy and I prefer the simple figure. However, I’ve been building up all summer for this change in style. After I set the finished painting aside, I couldn’t stop looking at it. Not to change anything, just to enjoy the painting and the places it was taking me too. I actually dreamed about this painting before I started to paint it; the colors and her face were very dominate in my dream. Haunting beauty.

Enjoy!!

I love how her dress seems to both emerge from behind the blue shaded flora and also to float insubstantially before it. Quite a nice effect in such a poetic, fantasy image. =D

Seriously, I've already told you how amazing I find this one... i think the scan's a bit light, tho, washing out some of the brilliance of this piece.

Cheap scanners and light washes don't hang out much...or like each other for that matter.

Thanxx!! It was a messy technique but the outcome was easy to clean up.

So I REALLY enjoyed this one. Looks like you used all your techniques and the medium to it's full extent. :-)
Very beautiful.

Thank-You!! Its hard to paint, walk away, come back, paint again... and hope that you can remember the technique that you were using the first time. Yet, I am a true believer in organized chaos...and beauty created from implusive expression. This painting was a challenge.
